BMW PGA Championship

The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth is one of my favourite weeks of the year.
When the sun’s up, the sky blue and everything in bloom it’s a special occasion made even more so when people are walking around in warm sunshine enjoying a welcome burst of summer.
After finishing runner up to Luke Donald here last year it would be very nice indeed to go one better this time and I’m coming into it on the back of some decent form this year. I’ve won in Indonesia and had four top five finishes in America including third at The Masters.
The big difference this year is that I will be going into the tournament with a new caddy after my regular assistant, Billy Foster, snapped three tendons in his right knee in the warm-up to a soccer match. It’s obviously been quite disruptive because he’s an integral part of the team and my game and results have improved as a result of him being on the bag.
I’ve turned to Kiwi Michael ‘Sponge’ Waite to fill in while Billy gets better and I’m sure he will be an able replacement. He’s a guy I think I can get on with – a nice guy, very thorough caddie, lots of experience and he’s won a Major with Michael Campbell at the US Open. He’s obviously not Billy, but I’ve got every confidence in him.
This is the Tour’s flagship event and equal in prestige with the US Tour’s Players Championship because they attract the strongest fields of the season for both America and Europe outside the Majors. It’s also one I’ve never won so I’m hoping to put that right this week.
I was asked about rivalries this week and it’s just not something I really think about although it must have been great for spectators last year when we had the world’s number one and two fighting it out for the title.
But I’m never worried about what else is going on or what they are doing. To be perfectly honest and ruthless, I would rather I play brilliant this week and everybody else played rubbish. But the second bit of that is not going to happen although hopefully the first will.
So now I’m fit and ready for the off and hopefully will be able to bring you up to date with my lastest win next week.
