The Last Order of Merit
Posted: 24th October 2008
A lot of people keep asking me about the European Tour's Order of Merit. To be perfectly honest, I haven't been thinking about it too much.
Of course it would be nice to win it, but my focus has to be the Portuguese Masters and trying to win that. After this week the only other counting event I have is the Volvo Masters and if at the end of it I've won the Order of Merit then great, but if not, I won't worry about it.
Then it's off to the operating theatre for my tonsils out. They've served me well for 35 years, but now's the time to move on without them. The recovery period can be anything from four days to four weeks so hopefully I'll have plenty of time to prepare for the Million Dollar in Sun City.
I'm currently working on a few things with my swing because there are certain times on the course when I want to hit a shot and don't get into position in the golf swing that enables me to do that - just a few basic, simple things. Hopefully the changes will give me a couple more shots that I may need.
Finally, a word about one of the all-time golfing greats, Seve Ballesteros, who yesterday underwent a 12-hour operation on a brain tumour. Seve's always been a battler and hopefully he can use those battling qualities in this fight. Everybody on the European Tour now makes a good living and they owe nearly all of it to Seve. He and Greg Norman had a similar effect on me as I suppose Tiger Woods has on kids nowadays.
I remember having a bunker lesson from him once and then him doing the exact same shot with a five-iron. He just opened the club face and slid under it and almost holed it. 'You see,' he said. 'You don't even need a lob wedge or a sand iron to play that shot'. I think I took somebody out on the other side of the green when I tried it!
Everybody is hoping that Seve comes through this and recovers very quickly.
