Dubai Desert Classic 29th January - 1st February 2009

Lee is at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai this week, for the 20th Dubai Desert Classic.  He has only missed this event once (2002) since he turned professional in 1993.  His best finishes in this event were 2nd in 1999, 4T in 2000 and 6T in 1998 and 2005. He finished in T10th place last year.

He joined Darren Clarke and Robert Karlsson for the first two rounds, with tee-times of 8.10 (GMT + 4) on Thursday and 12.20 from the 1st on Friday. Tee-times went awry, however, when fog caused a delay of 2hours and 40 minutes on Thursday. Lee played well but the putts didn't drop. He made birdies on his first hole (10th) and the 13th but dropped a shot at 15, then birdied 1 and 3 but bogeyed the 8th. A 2-under 70 left him in T22nd place for the day, with a number of players still to finish their rounds.

Lee's revised tee-time for Friday was 17.30 (13.30 GMT) and he was only able to make par at the 1st two holes before play was suspended. On Saturday, he struggled on the remaining outward nine, making bogeys at 8 and 9, but picked up birdies at 10,13 and 17.  He had an eagle chance at the last, but the ball pulled up short by just inches and he had to settle for another birdie. His round of 70 left him 4 under par and in T24th place.

Following a quick turnaround, Lee had to settle for a third round 73 and he now lies in T38th place on 3-under par.  However, he was one of only 18 players able to complete their round! The remaining 50 will complete the third round on Sunday after play was suspended due to bad light.

Lee had a final round tee-time of 10.20 with Stephen Dodd and Richard Finch, and adding three bogeys on the front-nine and three birdies on the back-nine, he had to settle for par 72 for the day.  His final score of 285, 3-under for the event, earned him T39th place and €12,229 in prize money and he is now 31st in the Race to Dubai (€95,787).

He will now take a break before travelling to Perth for the Johnnie Walker Classic. However on Thursday morning (5th February), Lee will travel to The Belfry for the launch of The Lee Westwood Golf Academy
