Alstom Open de France 1st - 4th July 2010

Lee travelled to France on Tuesday for the Alstom Open de France , where last year he lost in a play-off to Martin Kaymer, following a 13-under par final score.

At the 1st hole, in the sudden death play-off,  Lee's second shot, over water to the green, found a gap between the sleepers and a sponsor's board. Taking his fourth from the drop zone he chipped onto the green, but missed a 20ft putt for bogey, leaving Martin Kaymer to putt to win the title.

Lee is paired with Robert Karlsson and Angel Cabrera for the first two rounds, with tee-times of 13.10 (GMT +1) on Thursday and 8.10 from the 10th on Friday.

Lee was involved in a hospital drama in Paris on Wednesday afternoon, but still hopes to play the Alstom French Open on Thursday. There was real concern after he was initially told that swelling in his right calf and ankle could be a blood clot.

But after pulling out of the pro-am at Le Golf National and being driven away with his wife Laurae, further tests brought good news.

Management spokesman Stuart Cage said: "The doctor has decided there is no DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or blood clot and that the problem has something to do with a reaction to the heat.   Lee is going to have an anti-inflammatory dressing put on the muscle and, if he rests up tonight, then hopefully the swelling will go down and he will be able to play tomorrow".

"He is certainly going to go to the course in the morning and make a decision then."

The event in Paris is scheduled to be his final Tour event before The Open at St Andrews.

Cage had earlier stated: "Lee felt pain in the calf and it was swollen yesterday, but when he woke this morning his ankle was swollen too.  Obviously he has to take the doctor's decision seriously because it's a very important time of the year with The Open coming up."

After practising in the morning, Lee decided he was fit to play.He shot a 1-under par 70 in the first round, making three birdies on the outward nine, and two bogeys on the way home.

He reckoned it was "Pretty good for a 'practise round'... I haven't played so you do forget how the course is going to play. I didn't really get the pace of the greens very well, which is down to lack of playing it, really.

There's penalties if you hit it off-line and you get rewarded for hitting it straight. If you hit good shots, you can get it close. Never too disappointed with shooting 2-under par on this course....if it firms up, it will be good preparation for The Open Championship.

As he is not playing in the Barclays next week, he will be "Getting ready for The Open Championship at St. Andrews. I've got the two-day Pro-Am on Monday and Tuesday (he is playing in the JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am, a charity event, on the 5th and 6th of July), and then I'll spend the rest of the week gearing up for St. Andrews. I will go up and play a practise round some day during the week next week, get a feel for it... try to work my way into it easy and get ready to go Thursday".

"I think I have an injury in there somewhere, either my Achilles, or Age, probably... It just gets sore as the day goes on. I don't think it affects the way I swing it. It's sorest when I'm walking. I've had it looked at before. I think all it needs is rest probably", but won't be able to rest until after the Open.   "I have a couple of weeks off after that and will put my feet up", he said.

Lee carded a hattrick of birdies from the 14th, but dropped a shot at 17 to go out in 2-under par. A double-bogey at 5, saw him fall to even par but he was back to 2-under, when he again birdied the 6th and 7th holes and recorded a second round 69, ending the day in T15th position on 3-under par.

Lee was paired with Alvaro Qiros and Ian Poulter for the third round, with  a 13.50 tee-time from the 1st. He recorded an even par 71, ending the day in T21st place. He plays the final round with Benjamin Hebert with an 11.56 start.

A final round score of 70 (1-under for the day) and 4-under par (280) for the event, earned €34,612.50 in prize money and T18th position.  Lee remains 5th in the Race to Dubai with €1,227,538 after 9 European Tour events.
