Whenever I'm being interviewed, that's good news! ... Lee Westwood

Fans

Tell us why you are a Lee Westwood Fan...
Lee has a fan base ranging from small children who want to be like him when they grow up, to grandmothers who never took much interest in golf before and are now glued to the TV whenever he is playing.

The Lee Westwood website was launched on 1st August 1998.
The website is run by the family based in Lee's home town of Worksop. We welcome any comments about Lee, his site or general comments you want to share with us.

I'm a fan because:

Teresa Cummings
Teresa Cummings My name is Teresa Cummings and I have had the honour and pleasure of meeting and playing with Lee in 2004 Nelson Mandela Invitational.

I had a great time at the 2004 Nelson Mandela Invitational. Not only is it a great cause, but lots of fun. Lee probably won't remember but I scored a net eagle on the hole I played with him. Our team took fourth place and won these great golf bags. He was a great source of inspiration.

I always watch whatever match he is playing and am a big fan. I hope to see him in Atlanta at the East Lake Golf Coca-Cola invitation.

I also have had the pleasure of meeting and playing one hole with Andrew Coltart. I also support Andrew whenever he plays. I look forward to seeing them both this year at the Nelson Mandela Invitational in South Africa.
Meet Lee Westwood fan Fran Radford
Fran Radford Who should we spot in the Daily Mail (14.5.02) but Worksop fan Fran Radford. Sixty-five year old Fran, whose hobbies were reading, knitting, sewing and enjoyed driving was at a loss when she found that she had developed age-related macular degeneration. Not one to sit about she decided to follow her husband on to the golf course. She found that with her husband keeping his eye on the ball, she was able to play, and now thoroughly enjoys it. Fran has made lots of friends and has joined the English Blind Golf Association, which she says has helped her a lot. As part of the Adult Learner's week Fran is one of a hundred people to be rewarded for her determination to broaden her horizons.

With only 50% vision, Fran would joke that she felt like Sherlock Holmes when she had to use a magnifying glass to help her with her shopping or to read a bus number but rather than sit at home missing out on life Fran believes that people should really just 'have a go'. "Learning is never too late. If I can do it anyone can!"
Leigh Beveridge
Leigh Beveridge Meet Leigh who is a keen nine year old golfer from Denny in Scotland and plans to be famous like Lee. Already he has his picture on the Rookie golf club website and was also in Bunkered magazine in February 2001. During the 2002 Summer holiday Leigh managed to score 53 for 9 holes from the Ladies tee. Not bad for a nine-year old. This included a drive over the Atlantic Ocean (it comes in at high tide and you have to drive 130 yards over it), which he loves to tell everyone about (his Grandpa says).

  • WHY I AM A LEE WESTWOOD FAN ...

     Matthew Blakey of Gainsborough
Golf Club says he is a Lee Westwood fan because " I have problems with my game and by watching you on TV I can see what I am doing wrong. Also you show us how golf is really played!"

Mark Frary of Eaton Golf Club says, " I am a one handicap golfer in Norwich and have always admired Lee Westwood for his grit and determination.  He's a great competitor and although I have never met him he seems a warm, nice chap".

Tony Benn of Ullesthorpe Golf Club , Leics. says, "I have business connections which take me past Worksop GC. I often think about Lee as I drive by. I like and admire Lee's demeanour on the golf course. He comes over as a gentleman and all round nice guy. Best wishes for loads more success!"

Eric Wind of Manitowoc, Wisconsin , said, "I am a huge fan of yours and have been for many years.  I am now 20 years old and am a sophomore at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.  Your great playing inspired me to buy PING clubs in the late 90s when I started really getting into the game.  I played golf in high school and still try to play when I can.  I still fondly remember when you won the Order of Merit!  Keep up the great playing!

Freya Barksby of Gainsborough Golf Club ."I love watching Lee play golf.  He is a fantastic inspiration to all us juniors that play the game. He often comes to our club and signs hats and I would love to have a round with him. Lee is a true inspiration!"

Sunisa Chatuthip emailed to say, "You ' re my favourite golfer . I met you at The Royal Trophy in Thailand. I was very glad to see you and hope to see you again next year. I had my photograph taken with you and think you are very nice and kind".

Dave Riddell of Ohio says he's a fan because "Lee plays the game the right way.  I admire his dedication to the history of the sport as well as his attention to the newly forged physical demands of competition on the global stage.  He is a role model and I always find myself applauding his friendship with Darren Clarke.  Go get 'em Westy!  We love you in Ohio!"

Jenny Rowe from the US says, " I saw you play for the first time during round 2 at the Masters.....I was sitting right behind the 14th tee box and was amazed by your swing.  Good luck in the final round!!!! "

Nick Lobdell from the US emailed us to say, " I started pulling for Lee in '97 when I first got the Golf Channel. I loved his game and specifically his killer instinct when leading. I was disappointed last year when Lee was unable to play the Memorial here in my home town. I enjoyed following him here in '03 & also followed him around Firestone in '04. I chatted up Lee's caddie and he was nice enough to give me 3 of Lee's Titleists which are now framed and mounted. Best of all Lee had a top 10 finish.
Hope to see Lee in Ohio soon.

Gary Fletcher from Southwood, Farnborough says," I think Lee could get into the top 5 in the world this year.  I have followed his golf since 2000 and think now is the time for him to go for it! Good luck this year!  See you at the BMW... my son has got me tickets!
    (Feb 2008)

Tom Richard says, "Lee actually looks like he enjoys playing the game.  I had the opportunity to follow him for a couple of rounds at the Dubai Desert Classic, and it was the most fun I've had on a golf course short of playing!  I was impressed not only with his game, but his treatment to the fans that followed him.  A truly genuine nice guy!"
    (Feb 2008)

This is a good one from Muriel Wesley of Heathrow CC in the US who says, " I met Lee through a friend of mine who works for the Golf channel, this past week during the Bayhill Classic in Orlando, Fl.   I have to say, being  "naive" to the golf world I asked Lee if he was one of the caddies .  He was so amused & humbled by it, I had to go & watch him play.  My first time at a golf tournament was so enjoyable just to watch him .  What a great player and a class act gentlemen.  Lee--I told you you would win Bayhill, you played like a true winner.  Not bad for a caddie.  Cheers!"

Bill Fenton from Scarborough, North Cliff (UK) says, I was a member at Worksop 1968 to 1971, I have followed Lee all the way, hoping one day to see his first major. Good luck in the Irish Open.  I am now 81 years old so don't be too long!  Bill.

Regarding the US Open - June 2008

    Harvey from Foxhills
says, "Lee is just like the rest of us who love this game of golf there is no "I am special so treat me like a super star" he is just a normal good guy.
I am sitting in my lounge on Sunday evening its 11.30 pm and I am bitting those nails, come on my son just keep it going 1 shot ahead after 8 holes.
What a party we will have back in the UK if our man pulls it off!
Be proud Lee 'cause your playing the best golf I ve seen you play in years, your putting is a different class to what it was back in April at the Masters.
    Good luck Lee! (15.6.08).

Simon Britton e-mailed to say, "I am an Englishman who is a staunch Tiger fan.
Having said that, you made me jump off my seat numerous times, you also made
me prouder than I've been for a long time with your interview after the finish.
Total dignity demonstrating your total class - you should be prouder of yourself than everyone else who has been watching you! Thanks Lee! ( 16.6.08 )
